Dhoni again banned for slow-over rate
Captain of India M.S Dhoni may not agree but his teammates consume a lot of time in-between overs. On Sunday, for instance, when bowlers Vinay Kumar felt a cramp while trying to bowl the first ball of the 37th over he pulled up mid-way. The support staff rushed in with energy drinks and there seemed to be no urgency to get back into the game.
Such delays and some big-hitting by the Aussies in the slog over’s saw India take 28 minutes extra to bowl their 50th over. In the end, it cost India dear with the ICC charging a one-match suspension on Dhoni after India was fined for second minor over-rate offence within a year.
India was ruled to be two over’s short at the end of the match when time allowances were taken into consideration.
Andy Pycroft of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees imposed a 40% fine on Dhoni while each of his players lost 20% of their match fees. India’s first minor over-rate offence in ODIs was in the 2011 World Cup final against the Lankan’s in Mumbai on 2nd April. Dhoni will now have to sit out of India’s crucial next game against Sri Lanka on Tuesday.
