“Where is the editorial of our website Sourav Da? “ Ayan, Riju ,Ranjini , Sunipa , all of them have been eating my head with this one question,since our website www.thekolkatanews.net has been launched. And their only request was that I’ve to write the editorial. I told them that I’m totally from the web world (IT), and I won’t really be the perfect one to write one. But they wouldn’t let it go. Therefore I had to take up the pen with my unaccustomed fingers.

While writing, so many things jumbled up into my mind. I truly felt that such thoughts should be put down here. But it’s not possible to turn all the thoughts into the pen and paper. Now let’s come to the point. Why has this news portal www.thekolkatanews.net been launched?

About 8 months ago, an idea flashed in my head. There should be a platform in the web world where we can deliver our thoughts and can expose the people of Kolkata, their thoughts and feelings, supports  and protests, cries and laughters. But ain’t it better if these thoughts could be spread world wide? It indeed is! I told everything to Manas( Manas Banerjee, a well wisher of Kolkata News) and he also showed interest in it. Although he already had launched an online Bengali magazine which gave him a name in the web world, he had spread his hands of help towards me. We booked a domain in the name ‘THE KOLKATA NEWS’, and gave the tag line – “Speaks Worldwide” which had been selected by Manas. Actually I wanted to convey the news of Kolkata to the people of the whole country and world also.

The website had been launched. Next I made contacts with Ranjini, Sunipa, Ayan and Riju. They started working;and the journey had begun from July 2011! 6 months passed. In these 6 months, there are so many things we’ve successfully achieved, and cherished as well.. The number of our viewers is increasing gradually. Till 6th February the number of viewers of our website has crossed 7,800. We also have viewers from different countries like Australia, Germany, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Saudi Arab, Qatar, Korea, Spain and more. When we started our journey our world ranking was something around 1 crore 64 lakh and no rank in India. But now our world rank is 4, 31,223 and Indian rank is 41,684 (according to the records of www.alexa.com). Standing here now, we proudly say that we have stood beside the Kolkatans every moment, have tried our level best to keep them updated and entertained, have tried to become the litmus paper that can touch their heart and change all their sorrows into happiness. In the mean time we have interviewed personalities like Sujato Bhadra, Piyush Guha etc. We also have got Bengali actress Payel, actor Subhamay, Biswajit and Bengali Band Bhoomi exclusively in our website. Some flaws might have been there, but still you have been with us all the time and hopefully it will be so in future also.

Change of ruling party i.e. ‘Poribarton’ has come to our state. Our honourable Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has proposed so many projects all over West Bengal and we are waiting for the realty of those projects. We are claiming to her that the online portals should get the same importance like the other electronic and print media are getting now. Press releases should be sent to the web portals which will help us to publish news. We hope that our CM will pay attention in this part also. by now, she has succeeded to establish an identity of her own, that she represents the common people , and makes no distinction between intellects and non intellects, educated and uneducated, clever and not-so-clever. So, here also, she would not surely discriminate.
